Impressions of the Film
I had heard about Hell Fest (2018) tangentially via marketing in 2018, not feeling motivated enough to see it in theaters, and came across it via Netflix streaming this recent year. With some curiosity knowing the premise I decided to give it a shot.
After all, when I was 23 I worked at a “haunted house” here in Salt Lake City Utah. I remember the difficulty that patrons could be, and how fun it was to make them scream. I had a horrifying experience of my own while working there that year. It was the moment I realized I could genuinely scream for help, and people around me wouldn’t know the difference as I was dressed in a costume garb.
That seemed to me to also be the premise of this film and so it intrigued me. I wanted to see what they did with it.

I’m lukewarm towards this film. There are MANY fantastic/artistic expressions of horror that I love that are openly available in the last decade alone. Hell Fest isn’t very expressionistic, it’s a popcorn horror film.
The dialogue is a bit dry, like someone who was 40 years old trying to write how they think “the kids” talk, making the characters pretty flat and without much personality or individuality. They were there to be stabbed. Merry Halloween… have some spurts of blood from characters you don’t connect with.
I don’t think this is the casts fault at all. In fact I greatly enjoyed a few on the cast in other roles. We’ll discuss that more in the cast section.
And the fact that they sold up the billing to include Tony Todd (Original 1992 Candyman himself) was inflated to say the least (I think he had 6 lines and 3 minutes of screentime?) I was also curious as the composer is Bear McCreary. I LOVE THIS MAN. Bear for me is one of the topmost talented entertainment composers that is underappreciated. I’ll get into that more later. But first let's talk about how this film performed.
Budget and Monetary Performance
With a lower consistent horror budget of $5.5 Million Hell Fest (2018) did a decent $18.2 Million in returns. 3x any investment is a good call, even if the film itself is “so-so”. That is why studios will turn out any ol’ horror flick that sounds like it’ll hit the right notes an audience expects of horror. Its because horror is constantly the genre that will make you your money back. People just get curious to see what you made.
Audience reception was luke-warm to disliked. With an average of 39% on Rotten Tomatoes . Not the most hated horror film out there, but probably not the rental you’re looking for either. At least, that’s how we feel at Copper Shock.
Plotkin's relentless button-pushing, coupled to the script's cringe-inducing yooftalk, instead mark Hell Fest (2018) as unmistakably the work of middle-aged execs trying to jab suggestible teenagers back into cinemas.

The Production
Director: Gregory Plotkin
Gregory Plotkin is newer to directing in Hollywood with four credits under his belt. One of which is this film. The other horror franchise to note is that he directed Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension. Greg’s Hollywood credence more lends toward his skills in film editing. Major hitters like Jordan Peels Get Out (2017), Happy Death Day (2017), and the quirky comedy Game Night (2017).
Timing is a large portion that plays into a horror film's effectiveness. Comedy and Horror are two sides of the same coin, so his resume in piecing together well timed films is certainly in his wheelhouse.
The whole film for me is that it’s important to see it through our main characters eyes. And she is somebody who is very much at a crossroads in her life.
Script Writers of Hell Fest (2018)
Seth M Sherwood
For Seth M Sherwood, you’re welcome to look through his IMDB, but he has not really hit his stride on other works.
Blair Butler
for Blair Butler click her name for her IMDB.
Akela Cooper
She has the most recognizable credit in contributing to Malignant (2021) which isn’t really a good thing to the Copper Shock crew as the dialogue in this film is notoriously bad.
Music of Hell Fest (2018)
Bear McCreary
I LOVE Bear McCreary compositions. One of my all time favorites is "Violence and Variation", or “Battlestar Sonatica” , both songs from Battlestar Galactica TV series from the early 2000’s. Bear also carries musical credits to that of 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016), Happy Death Day (2016), Freaky (2020), Childs Play (2019), The Walking Dead (2010-2022), The Forest (2016), and many more. Dude is a force of amazing dark but beautiful music.
However, I’m not gonna lie, I don’t think the score for Hell Fest (2018) was his strongest. It doesn’t stand out the way the jittery staccato of The Walking Dead theme song, the lullaby in Battlestar Galactica, or even the off kilter leaning and wailing of strings in 10 Cloverfield Lane. It’s still worth adding to your playlist if you’re sitting down to do some horror writing, but it didn’t stand out to me.

Cast of Hell Fest (2018)
Amy Forsyth
Amy Forsyth has a smattering of credits to her name. Amy plays the main character whom we follow around in Hell Fest (2018). Her filmography has some consistent television appearances. Just before Hell Fest (2018) she co-starred in Beautiful Boy (2018) with Steve Carell and Timothee Chamlet just before the release of Hell Fest. But since this film the majority of her career has gone back into television appearances
Reign Edwards
Reign Edwards plays the main characters' faithful sidekick and best friend who grew up together as kids. Reign acting credits like her co-star has a myriad of television credits to shows we are unfamiliar with.
Bex Taylor-Klaus
Surprisingly, Bex Taylor-Klaus was not cast as the lead in this film. I do believe she is the strongest choice out of everyone billed. Honestly I think I would have preferred it. If you were to watch Hell Fest (2018) alone for this opinion you might think I'm nuts as her character was so much larger than life that her acting style was almost too much. Frankly I think she had to over compensate for the fact that everyone else was bland.
Despite some of the spastic nature of Bex’s character on screen as the thumb-to-the-air, “don’t give a damn what people think of me so i’m going to dress in grunge…” character. I also believe she was the most talented to bring any flavor to the screen in her character choices and fluctuation in line delivery.
Bex has been in other projects like Netflix’s Dumplin (2018), MTV's Scream the TV Show, a consistent role on Arrow (2012-2020), and in 13 Reasons Why (2017-2020). She stands out from her other cast mates by a mile.
Supporting Male Leads
The male leads are all also working actors who do not really have many recognizable credits to their name at the time of this publication. Christian James, Matt Mercurio , and Robby Attal. Welcome to click on their names to see their IMDB filmography lists.
Stephen Conroy
The final character is that of “The Other” which is the credit title to the characters name whom walks around in a mask stabbing unwitting or ungrateful cheeky teenagers at Hell Fest. This character was played by Stephen Conroy . Nope he’s not a household name lady’s and gents but this is an OG when it comes to Hollywood stuntwork. The man has been doing Stuntwork for only 10 years but has over a 100 credits to his name in that regard. He’s been in films like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017), Spiderman: Homecoming (2017), Black Panther, Ant Man and the Wasp (2018), the Walking Dead Series (2014-2021), and Stranger Things (2016-2022).
Dude has worked on more high profile film sets than EVERYONE in cast or Crew. Marvel, Disney, and even Rock Johnson hired him to do stunts in this years Red Notice (2021).
PHEW. Now that I can catch my breath on how long it took to cover Stephen’s Massive hollywood history. Lets talk about his character. The idea that the director was attempting to carry into “The Other” was to that of Jamie Lee Curtis’ Halloween. A masked figure that doesn’t talk, and doesn’t stop terrifying you.
What is Hell Fest (2018)?
Hell Fest is a traveling haunt if you will. They take an interesting spot every year and travel around the country. Each year its in a different city, different state. And they put on the very best of the best of haunts. Incorporating some new school scares and old school scares. Because they’re never in the same place twice they’ve built up a cult following.

Rules for the Hell Fest (2018) Universe

- The Other Killer has a collection of other masks supposedly as souvenirs of years past that exactly match the Hell Fests crew.
Hell Fest (2018) Film Plot Holes
Hell Fest (2018) isn’t without its difficulties and weaknesses.
Who makes snow cones by hand? AND IN OCTOBER…
The killer is able to attain his first highly sharp weapon by sneakily stealing it from a resting place of a snow cone cart (IN OCTOBER). It’s a sheared and serrated knife that clearly is being actively used as the cart attendant is in the middle of servicing a customer. Sooooo he didn’t notice his one way to make his job work go missing? Or didn’t report it missing to security because it’s a massive knife?...Basic security for haunts doesn’t exist in this universe
Again I worked in a haunted house for a season in my youth, and the very bare minimum security thing you must do is a “walk through” of a haunt ideally every half hour. This is to 1) Check on the actors if anyone has attacked them (Happens a lot especially if people are drunk when walking through a haunt) 2) To see if anything is broken after multiple uses that maintenance needs to fix. I pulled a ripcord to throw a jumpscare at a patron for the 30th time that night In a very basic cheap haunt that isn’t that seasoned and knows to walk through every room. They’re bound to notice a body sitting in a room (The first film kill), and they’re bound to notice blood spatters that don’t belong (Because I promise you they’ve seen every room a 100 times for work.)Why is the ticketing system for 16+ if there’s open carry alcohol nearly everywhere?
Maybe this one is more common than I expect, but I don’t think it’s in the haunts exact interest to provide alcohol with the experience. You’re far more likely to get unruly guests who will attack your haunt actors. There is a special type of haunt goer who insist on getting hammered ahead of going through a haunted house, but I can’t imagine a business actively telling people to get drunk then go into isolated spaces with a single scare actor thinking that won’t land anyone in trouble.
High traffic "Employee Only" areas don’t discover a body for over an hour
Just because its “Employee only” really doesn’t mean deserted. It just means that it’s out of sight and mind of patrons while the workers use those paths without second thought. When the second kill happens to the date of the main lead actress, he is standing in a locker room where prize dolls need to be actively retrieved periodically and we even see an employee just retrieve a ton of stuffed animals to go distribute to the booths. The guy is killed with a large heavy wooden mallet from a “Hit the bell” strongman carnival game. Of which who wouldn’t notice the only way to get that game to work (the mallet) is missing? Besides, the film says that the group of friends know he’d been missing for over an hour and yet, the entire park isn’t shut down from SOMEONE going back for more stuffed toys and seeing the dead guy.
